Compressing files is always a good idea if you wish to transfer them over the Internet or store them for safe keeping. There is no shortage of compression utilities on the Internet, but finding one that satisfies all your needs can take some time. A utility that stands out in a crowd is Archiver, due to its support for numerous archive formats and the large number of useful features it provides. The program works fast and its functions are easy to understand, even for novice users.

Installing Archiver is a simple procedure, which takes less than a minute to complete. Besides regular configurations, like selecting a destination folder or creating shortcuts, you can also set Archiver as your primary file compressor and associate it with various archive types. The software can be used on Windows XP or any later edition and it does not ask for too many resources.

Due to its familiar design, Archiver can serve as a file manager as well. Its user interface is laid out like a standard explorer window. You can browse through your local folders, access any files, regardless of their format. Options for copying, moving, deleting and so on can be found in a column, on the left side of the interface, where you can also bring up an explorer-like navigation pane. Local and removable drives can be selected above the main files list and common locations, like Documents folder or Network locations, can be accessed instantly, via navigation buttons. Additionally, you may create one or more tabs, if you wish to access different locations in parallel.

Selected files can be compressed by clicking an option, located on a toolbar. This will display a small configurations window, on which you can select an archive format and compression level and make other settings, like including sub-folders, encrypting file names and more. You can access an archive's contents on the same interface, just like opening a folder. It is also possible to add new files to an existing archive, by simply dragging and dropping the files over the archive.

A few extra options are made available on the left side of the interface, depending on what contents you select. For example, if you select an image, you will find options for resizing, rotating or converting the file, but if you select an archive, the software will provide you with options for extracting its contents, verifying or converting the archive to a self-extracting executable. Archiver's capabilities don't stop here. It comes with many other useful features, like adding folders to a favorites list, encrypting archives, sending files by email and more.

Pros

Archiver provides support for all popular archive formats. What's more, you can use it as a file manager as well. The software's numerous features give it a clear advantage over Windows Explorer or other file managers.

Cons

There are no obvious issues to mention. Creating archives in almost any format, with various compression levels, encrypting and converting them are just a fraction of what Archiver has to offer.
